the sunrise swim

We stayed up until the early hours of the morning, snuck out of the house, and made our way across the small trail in the forest, the moon being our only source of light. We got to the beach just as the sun started to rise, leaving a purple, pink, and orange glow over the mountains in front of us and the lighthouse to our left.

We ran out into the freezing cold pacific ocean, making a deal that we each had to go completely under the water. We dunked our heads and swam around a little, floating on our backs, taking in the sunrise and the birds flying overhead, before running to shore and grabbing our towels.

We stood still, not saying a word while we watched the blue herons and seagulls fly over the water, and squealed like little girls when we saw some seals just a few feet from where we were swimming. We watched the waves splash into the rocks, towels draped across our shoulders, and told each other that we should really leave and get home before the parents woke up to go to work and realized we weren't in our beds. But we couldn't bring ourselves to walk away from the beautiful scene before us. It was so calm, so peaceful, and still.

Eventually though, we made ourselves go, stopping on the bridge before going to the forest to get one last glimpse.

This early morning sunrise swim will never be forgotten. It was perfect.
